Men's PoloMen's Water Polo #1 Heading into Big 8 Tourney
The SRJC Men's Water Polo team has landed a first round bye, in the Big 8 Championship Tournament this weekend hosted by Delta College, in Stockton. After an impressive defensive 4-3 victory over rival No. 2 Diablo Valley, and a final home game win over No. 3 Modesto (14-7), the Cubs enter the tournament as the only undefeated team in the Big 8 (5-0). Automatically advancing to the semi-final game, SRJC will play the winner of the No. 4 American River vs. No. 5 Delta game on Saturday 11/7 at 9:10am. With a strong performance this weekend, the Cubs look to advance to the Northern California Playoff Championship Tournament at West Valley College, in Saratoga 11/13-14. Ariel LockshawWomen's Water Polo Heads to Big 8 Champs
SRJC Women's Water Polo went into the season young after turning over more than half of their 2008 NorCal Champioship team last season. The 2009 Cubs have played through one of the toughest game schedules in SRJC history in the hopes that it would prepared them to peak this weekend at the Big 8 Championship Tournament in Stockton. No. 4 SRJC opens tournament play against No. 5 Fresno City Friday at 10:10am. A win would give the Cubs another shot against No. 1 Modesto, who SRJC nearly upset in their 8-10 home game last week. A top four finish this weekend would assure the team a berth to the NorCal Championship Tournament next weekend at West Valley College. Women's Soccer Reach Out to Their Community The women from the Santa Rosa Junior College soccer team took time to help the Redwood Empire Food Bank on Saturday August 22, 2009. After finishing their first week of school, the full-time student-athletes spent their Saturday morning serving their community.  Combining tasks of sorting packages, creating gift bags, and separating food items, the team had an opportunity to become more involved in the community, one of the top priorities this season. “We decided that this season we wanted to place an emphasis on social awareness issues,” said third-year head coach Emiria Salzmann. “It is so important that we teach our student-athletes the importance of being productive and proactive people in their own communities, especially during these trying times.” The team began the Canned Food Drive at their first home game and will continue the Drive through every home game of the 2009 season.  A food bin will be placed at the entrance to the field where canned food and non-perishable food items will be collected. Fans and supporters are asked to help the women’s soccer team provide much needed support and food items to persons and families in need by bringing canned food and/or non-perishable food items to the games.  The canned food will be collected, delivered to the Redwood Empire Food Bank, and weighed. The women’s soccer team has already surpassed their goal of collecting 250 pounds of food, and have collected 265 pounds with two remaining home games to go. Please bring your donations to the final home games on November 11th and 18th. Your support is greatly appreciated!
